Wanderings

I walked Shady over to the Kaysville ponds today. There were a number of pelicans in addidion to the usual ducks and geese, and I always enjoy looking at pelicans. Unfortunately they were nervous animals, and this is the best picture I could get. The large white bird near the reeds is a pelican.
Last night we took our walk in City Creek Canyon in Salt Lake. I had never been there before so it was something of an adventure. Apparently the paved road goes all the way to the top of the canyon, but we didn't walk that far. It is closed to traffic so there are just a lot of walkers, bikers, and joggers. It is a little crowded for my taste, but not as bad as the Legacy Parkway trail. I am on the Enrichment Committee at work, and they have asked me if I would perhaps start a dog walking group, so I am looking for a spot where a bunch of people can get together to walk their dogs. I know a lot of good places out here, but not many in Salt Lake, so City Creek Canyon may be the spot.

I also had an adventure on roller blades last week that I forgot to blog. In my never ending quest to wear my dog out I decided to try roller blading with her. I took her over to the trail that runs between Kaysville and Farmington one afternoon and we set off. As you start on the trail on the Kaysville side you have to go up a little hill, then the trail is fairly flat. We did really well until we came back to the little hill on our way back to the car. There were three teenage boys walking a ways ahead of me, so I waited for them to reach the bottom of the hill and get far enough ahead of me that I thought I could slow down before I reached them. Unfortunately with an excited coonhound pulling me I did not slow down in time. I yelled to the boys to get out of my way, and they just glanced back at me and stayed where they were, so I had to throw myself down on the side of the trail. It wouldn't have been a bad fall except that the side of the trail was covered with puncture weeds. I ended up with about 20 puncture weeds broken off under my skin on my right knee as well as some on my hand and elbow. It took me several days to get all of the thorns out and I decided that roller blading was probably not the best idea for me. I will stick with walking from now on.

I'm sorry that you got hurt, but I have to admit to LMAO right now. I have this mental picture that is hilarious! I can just see those boys looking at you and totally ignoring th situation.

What ever possessed you to think that rollerblades was a good idea with that rowdy hound?

The pelican is very cool. When the picture is blown up it shows up really nice.

Oh, I can't wait to meet that rowdy hound in a couple of weeks! I booked some airfare and will have a whole day and a half with you all!!!

I can't believe how daring you are... I can't even imagine rollerblading with Bel, she would be a total idiot. I took the two of mine walking the other day and, although Nate swears by the gentle head collar, I nearly went nuts with it. Every time I had to stop and pick up potty or untangle leashes she would wiggle her snout out, I can hardly contain her.

I am getting a pinch, I can't deal with being pulled around on a walk, it is a nightmare!

I can TOTALLY relate to your "never ending quest to wear your dog out". The only peace we get is after we go play fetch with Belly or take her on a run. I have almost given up on the walks because it takes so long to wear her down. I cannot wait until I can take Bella on my run with me, so I don't have to take a seperate run with her. The Vet says that we have to ease her into running and we probably shouldn't take her more than a mile or two at a time.

I think I have forgot to ask a very important question: Does Shady FETCH? I remember always harrassing you that Tick couldn't fetch. I can wear Bella down in about 15 minutes throwing the ball for her. You should give it a try. It is safer than roller blading behind a "shady" dog.

Yay Ang! I can't wait to see you.

Nate, my dog does play fetch but usually not for more than 5 or 10 minutes, and it doesn't come close to wearing her out. She only plays fetch when she wants to do it, not when I think it would be a good idea. She would probably play fetch non-stop with the large squeaky tennis balls that I get at PetsMart, but the problem is that once she breaks the squeaker she doesn't want it any more.

I can picture you throwing yourself down! It doesn't look good. I am sorry for all your puncher wounds! How very sore they must still be!
When is Ang coming home! Will we all get to see her? Let me know.
Love ya.

OMG Jen! Seriously, you should have just run those boys down. I think roller blades would not be the best idea for you LOL.

Did you think about the dog park in Salt Lake for your group of walkers?
